TBL’s Clarification on Rainforest Action Network ( RAN )’s Report
The following is PT. Tunas Baru Lampung Tbk (TBL or The Company) comments in regards to the allegations that was directed against the Company in a report published by an organization called Rainforest Action Network (RAN), dated 23 April 2025:
- The said organization has NEVER contacted TBL to cross check or confirm the validity of the information stated in their report;
- The said organization referred to TBL as “a company with egregious environmental record related to destruction of peatlands and recurring fires and haze”. This is nothing sort of slander, since TBL is a law-abiding Company that always conduct our business within the applicable rule and regulations in Indonesia. The Company closely followed the principles of good agricultural practice, including natural forest and peatland protection, as dictated by the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) guidelines;
- The report mentioned about the conversion of peatland to plantation in PT. SUJ, a subsidiary of TBL. In October 2018, The Company welcomed Global Environment Centre, a reputed, independent tropical peatland expert to verify alleged deforestation and peatland conversion in Ogan Komering Ilir, South Sumatera, by PT SUJ. Through extensive field observations during their site visit in the area, Global Environment Centre concluded that the current planted areas do not fall under the category of peat soil (both according to ISPO and RSPO definitions) it is stated as acid sulphate soil , hence confirming that the allegation was unfounded;
- The report mentioned about PT. DGS as part of TBL. The said company is no longer a subsidiary of TBLA since it was already sold off to a 3rd party and spun out of TBL in 1November 2022;
- The report also mentioned about peatland fire on TBL concession in Ogan Komering Ilir, South Sumatera, in 2023. This is false and misleading information, since there was no such fire incident happened within The Company’s owned plantation area as suggested.
Given that much of the data stated in the report are false and intended to discredit the Company, TBL might consider taking the necessary legal action.
